4 yr. old-St. Lucia Day
In Sweden, St. Lucia Day is their festival of lights. Early on St. Lucia Day, a young girl of the family dresses in a long, white robe with a red sash. On her head is placed a crown of greens, with lighted candles. She goes from room to room, waking the family and serving them coffee, cakes and Lucia buns flavored with saffron. Boys, called star boys, wear long, white shirts and pointed hats. They help carry the sweets.
3 yr. old-St. Nicholas Day
Children in Germany receive a visit from St. Nicholas on the night of December 5. St. Nicholas is a tall bearded man who wears a bishop's robe and hat. He travels on a white horse. Children leave their shoes out filled with hay for the horse. In the morning, their shoes are filled with gifts and treats.
3 yr. old-Animals in Winter
We learned about what different animals do in the winter. Bears and other animals hibernate, fox and other animals stay awake because they know they'll still be able to find food, squirrels and other animals store food before winter, and some birds fly south. But other birds stay around in the cold so we made a bird feeder with bird seed for them to eat.
